TOP 10 reasons to choose BIS

As the first International Baccalaureate World School in the Kyrgyz Republic, we meet the top standard for truly international education and offer the prestigious IB Diploma for students age 16-18. IB students develop strong academic, social and emotional skills and are more likely to enrol at top universities than students from other programmes. Younger students in the IB Primary Years Programme and Middle Years Programme also outperform other students in a number of areas. BIS is also the first school in Bishkek to offer accreditation with Cambridge International Examinations for Kyrgyz citizens and we continue to hold Cambridge accreditation and offer the IGCSE programme and exams for students age 14-16. Accreditation with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) Council for International Education supports high standards throughout the school and provides authority for the BIS High School Diploma for graduating students.

Students enjoy the happy, safe and supportive environment at BIS. As the Korooluev family told us before they moved to USA: “For us, the best thing about the school was that our kids were happy there. They integrated well and absolutely loved the school, teachers and fellow students.” Our whole approach to learning is to create a great place for students to learn, where everyone is encouraged to achieve their best potential. Within this happy environment we focus on providing excellent education. Students want to come to school and learn!

Our teachers from USA, Canada, UK, Belgium, France, South Africa, Japan, Korea and Kyrgyzstan, bring a wealth of international teaching experience and provide education based around academic excellence. Specialist teachers provide engaging programmes for Languages, Individuals & Societies, Science, Computer Science, Math, Music, Art, Dance and PE. With excellent teachers and a low student-teacher ratio, all students receive individual attention to help them achieve more.

At BIS, the classroom is just one of many opportunities for learning. Since the school was opened, parents have praised the extracurricular programme including rock-climbing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, badminton, film-making, cooking, crafts, and more. In the words of the Lee family: “students have many chances to present their works, doing scientific experiments, building teamwork. Through this learning process, my kids gained confidence and were not afraid of performing in front of others.”

Students from America, Europe, Japan, China, Korea, and over 30 countries world-wide, provide a culturally diverse and creative learning environment. English is the main language of communication and instruction so that so that students have opportunities to join the world’s best universities and multinational companies in future. For English learners we have a strong programme of English Language Acquisition from one-on-one support to full immersion of learning in English. In the words of the Spernol family: “the school makes a lot of effort to bring non-English speaking children up to the level of “usual” classroom English, with specific assistance adapted to the level of each child.”

We place great emphasis on language learning for all students. Students who are already proficient in English are encouraged to study at least two more languages. As well as supporting students in developing their own native languages we provide the opportunity to learn Kyrgyz, Russian, French, Spanish, German and Mandarin. Additional languages not only ease communication but they help students develop insights into the craft of language and influence of culture, and to realize that there are diverse ways of living, viewing and behaving in the world.

Our school was established by the community for the community and we never lose sight of the benefits of working together. Our Parents Committee is actively engaged in school governance and we practice a culture of open parent and school communication. Everything that we have achieved with the school is because of our joint commitment to success. Even when the going is tough, we always believe that ‘together, we can do this!’

BIS is a liberal secular non-profit school with transparent governance and operations. We have no major donor or sponsor and as a non-profit public foundation we have no investor. School fees pay for education costs or are invested in improving the school or to help provide scholarships. Our strict ethics policy means that we do not pay bribes and we pay all taxes; hence we currently pay 60% of all of the taxes paid by all international schools in Bishkek. These tax payments help to pay for education in state schools so that all children benefit.

Providing excellent education is the only reason for BIS to exist, which is why we also invest in scholarships for able students who are unable to afford school fees. Fifty percent of current high school students are scholarship students, with 50% to 90% discount from school fees.

While being within central Bishkek, the actual school location is in a quiet residential area well away from the traffic fumes and other dangers of major roads. We have a full-size outdoor basketball court, a real grass field, and an adventure playground with treehouses, zipline and climbing walls, giving students space and variety to enjoy themselves at break times. All buildings and facilities are designed and constructed for strong earthquake standards, fire safety and student security. This is a wonderful safe place for children to spend the day.

We encourage a culture of constant improvement for all students and for all aspects of school education, activities, operations and facilities. Our improvement culture is clearly visible in improvements to school facilities as we have more than doubled school capacity since 2015 by adding a 3rd floor and infilling a courtyard in the main school building and built new buildings.  These changes have created a multi-purpose sports hall; two libraries, three science labs, art room, music room, maker-space, fourteen classrooms, and a new café. We always work hard to be better in future!
